Texas lawmakers hope to pass gambling bill in next year’s legislative session

gambling bill

Texas lawmakers are hoping to pass a gambling bill during the next legislative session. The proposed bill would allow for the expansion of casino-style gaming in Texas, with the goal of boosting state revenue. Some lawmakers oppose the bill, arguing that it could lead to gambling addiction and other social problems.

But proponents say that gambling is already happening illegally in Texas, and that regulating the industry could help generate much-needed revenue for the state. Stay tuned for updates on this story as we get closer to the next legislative session.

It is a fact that the governments of all states are interested in legalizing sports betting in their territories due to the large number of benefits it provides. The main benefit of legalizing sports betting is the revenue it generates for state governments.

According to a report by the American Gaming Association, legalizing sports betting could generate up to $26 billion in annual tax revenue for state and local governments.

Another benefit of legalizing sports betting is that it would create jobs. The AGA estimates that legalizing sports betting would create up to 1 million new jobs across the United States. These jobs would be in various industries, including technology, media, and hospitality.

Finally, legalizing sports betting would have a positive impact on the economy. A study by Oxford Economics found that the economic impact of legalized sports betting would be $61 billion per year.

Due to the aforementioned, Texas lawmakers have already submitted a bill that would legalize sports betting and casinos two months after the start of the legislative session.

In Texas, the idea of the proposals regarding sports betting has been discarded because the governors have not wanted to defy religious conservatives opposed to expanded gambling.

But things have changed due to the good results that the gambling industry has given in other states, especially with the great potential for tax revenue generation and job creation.

Houston Democratic Sen. Carol Alvarado is the leading promoter of the bill. It proposes that the Legislature decide whether to legalize sports betting, and a newly created Texas Gaming Commission could issue up to four licenses for destination resorts.

Additionally, Texas sports betting will be legalized if a two-thirds majority approves the constitutional amendment of the legislature and state voters at the November 7, 2023 election.

The Texas legislative session will begin on January 10, 2023, and conclude on May 29, 2023.

At the moment, little is known about what the bill contains; it is only known that it sets a 10% tax rate on gross gaming revenue for table games and a 25% tax rate on gross gaming revenue for slot machines.

In addition to the little information available about the bill, many experts predict that it will not be easy for Lone Star State to have sports betting due to the strong religious opposition the bill will face.

Abbott is aware that he is facing opposition and is already preparing a campaign to deal with criticism.
“We don’t want slot machines at every corner store, we don’t want Texans to be losing money that they need for everyday expenses, and we don’t want any type of crime that could be associated with gaming,” said last month Renae Eze, Abbott’s press secretary, as reported by Houston Chronicle.
