California legal gambling stalled

In a state known for its progressive views, California has taken a step back in the sports betting industry. Despite high expectations that the Golden State would be among the ones to legalize sports betting this year, California residents have voted against such reform.

Proposition 26, supported by California’s Native American tribal governments, and Proposition 27, promoted by private gambling companies, will fail to win voter support after spending more than $400 million on campaigns.

Legal gambling won’t be coming to California for a long time.

The biggest lesson from voting in California is that legal gambling will take a long time to come to the state. Legalizing sports betting would require residents or state legislators to call a new vote, which could take months.

If betting legislation is approved in the supposed vote, it will take several months to prepare everything for the launch; also in that period, amendments and modifications could be made that could delay the process.

Given this scenario, it can be said that California will not have legal bets until 2024 or 2025 if things go well.

Others are more pessimistic and believe that due to the influence of groups such as native tribes, the state will have no legal stakes until an agreement is reached.

For Caesars CEO Tom Reeg, Proposition 27 failed because it went against the interests of the tribes. “I know the people that wrote Prop 27 well.

They have confidence in themselves, and they’re in a very big hurry. I told them I was around for Prop 5 and everything that’s happened ever since.

The tribes are undefeated against people like yourselves in this arena. So, you’re going to lose.’ I told them this,” Reeg said and added

“You’ve got to get on the same page with Indian Country if anything is going to happen in California.

That’s very clear. They got poor advice. Some lobbyists told them you can go this way, do an end-around and go in for football season next year. They believed what they wanted to believe, and you saw the result.”

For Indian Gaming Association chairman Victor Rocha, nothing will happen in California until they agree with the tribes, this was made clear in the following tweet, “When will California have sports betting?

My gut instinct says 4-6 years. The tribes are in no hurry. They can play defense forever,” Rocha tweeted.
